Remembering Demri Parrott and her Mom, Kathleen Austin; stories from Mara and Cindy

Demri Parrott and Mara Whelan

Not a day goes by that my soul doesn’t recognize that it isn’t missing its sister Demri. I will NEVER recover from losing her.  But I do have faith that her spirit is with me. When my son was born on October 30th 1998, I was recovering in the hospital and had a EXTREMELY vivid dream that she came into the room and picked him up and rocked him in the rocking chair. I believe her spirit was there that day.

This is only 1 of many experiences I have had. Her spirit is strong and still carries on! She taught me to say hello to the person in the bathroom stall next to me because you will never get a chance to again! It was a rule of hers! The girls bathroom was a place where Demri reached out to a ton women and validated them! She has never been noticed for this but she did a lot of it! She loved on and listened to a lot of  women in bathrooms at shows! She didn’t want to be back stage. She wanted to be with the crowd.

This is my portion of the story: I never knew Demri, but I knew Kathleen. I’ve had my own strange experiences. I was never scared by them, in fact, I’ve always felt honored. I’ve been an empath the majority of my adult life. At first I was unsure about what flashes of images I’d see in my head (like a psychic or medium) during certain situations or at specific venues. When it came to my own personal experiences with Demri, it’s been when I’m creating art that includes her.

I had a close relationship with Demri’s mom, Kathleen. Some believe that’s another reason why I can sense Demri at times. I guess one could say that when I’ve created some of my art boards, that it was a collaboration between myself and Demri – HAHA!

A few of Demri’s close friends and I helped care for Kathleen the last 2 weeks before she passed. Fabiola Gonzales really was the one who was with her the most during that time. Helping Kathleen’s longtime partner Larry. In all honesty, I was grateful I got to spend the time with Kathleen and make a promise to her about Demri. It was a promise I felt was easy to make. I told her that I would continue to post and talk about Demri. So many people know that it’s been easy for me to do. My friends like Mara have shared stories with me about her. She was stunning and as many call her “Layne’s muse”.

In closing, about 10 years prior to Kathleen’s death, she’d given me some photos of Demri from when she’d been in Jacksonville, Florida in 1987. Kathleen wanted me to have photos to share of her on my social media platforms. At some point I’d lost them. Fast forward to Friday, June 9th, 2023; I told Kathleen that I’d finally found the photos. She tells me that with me, they should stay. I don’t talk her out of it. In fact, I feel honored. Then we change the conversation to my artwork and possible names. Then when we’re discussing possible name, I instantly remember my friend Krista Kay telling me that Demri loved daisies. Then everything became very clear. Kathleen gave me permission to use Demri’s name in forming an artwork name. The final flow of how it came together wouldn’t come for another 18 months or so.

The call came on Monday evening; no chance for another visit, no chance to say goodbye. But she did tell me goodbye……the makeup mirror turned on by itself. Then it was Kathleen, Demri, Derek, Devin and Dave all together again.
