Alice In Chains’ Self-Titled Album Alternate CD Cover

I always knew Alice in Chains had an alternate album CD cover for their 1995 release of the same name.

My friend Steve had once told me about it and also stated he had acquired one of them. The alternate cover shows Sunshine, the dog model who appeared on the front, 3 legs and all his glory.

Yesterday I finally found photos of it. This CD was printed in Austria. They also put out all the other covers we’ve seen, the clear, purple & lime green CD cases With either purple or yellow discs. Some of the lyrics also appeared on this rare cover too and Sunshine now has 4 legs – wait….what?

What Sony actually did was put a plastic film overlay placed perfectly over the image. Making the cover image appear that Sunshine had all 4 legs and there were actual lyrics printed on it also. How incredibly ingenious for the mid-1990’s (see 2nd slide images).

The plastic film overlay as it sits on the inside of the CD Case.

Another fact you may’ve not known; Japan refused to put a disabled dog on the CD covers. From what I read, they felt it was wrong to display an animal that way. In all actuality, Sunshine was a professional dog model & I’m sure he didn’t have any issues with it😂😂. Ultimately, Japan & Taiwan chose to put nothing on the front cover other than the band’s name. They did however, still put out all 3 case colors as i previously mentioned.

It was great seeing this rare cover. Since I shared this on our social media sites (Facebook & Instagram), I’ve learned that a few others own this rarity too. Now if only I could get a hold of one!

One last thing to share, I’ve been in creative mode for a couple years now. I’ve had a lot of positive response too. Therefore, I’ve created an Instagram account just for my mixed media artwork. I chose to use Demri’s first name as part of the “brand”. I promised her mom Kathleen that I’d continue to help keep Demri’s name relevant. Plus the second name Daisy, because Demri loved Daisies and so do I. The name I chose was Demri and Daisy. The next step is to create a store on Etsy.
