Layne Staley Tribute 2023; Safety Tips for Out of Town Visitors

For those of you traveling to Seattle this week to attend the annual Layne Staley Tribute, it’s ALWAYS a good idea to do your own research.

Both me & Kurt live on the outskirts of Seattle. That means I research my trips into the city also. During tribute week, I find a parking garage and Uber-it.

I find that using Uber is one less thing I need to think about. BUT, just because you’re using that service, be smart and be safe. Know your surroundings and travel with someone from the same crowd, or of course a friend, why? because it’s common sense.

I’ve been attending the tribute for years now, and my routine is the same. Before you head downtown, make sure you have enough gas in your car and some cash. It comes in handy for street vendors or for emergencies.

1) Find a secure parking garage with reasonable 24/hr rates. Make sure you have access to your car after the clubs/bars close.

2) After you park, make sure you take a photo of your parking spot and location with your iPhone or Android, cell phone. Trust me this comes in handy if you’re not used to your surroundings.

3) Before you order your Uber pickup, get to an optimal location for the driver to see you. Uber will not pick you up on a corner or mid traffic. If you can get to a well lit public place, like a Starbucks, you’ll have better luck. Warning, if you are not in a place where your Uber driver can see you, they will charge you for a no-show, even if you are there. That’s why planning in advance, will save you some bucks.

4) For your own safety, make sure you do NOT ENTER the Uber car you’ve ordered, until you’ve verified the color, make, license plate number and license plate state. I cannot stress this enough. This can save your life and the life of your companion. Another important tip, if your Uber driver offers you a free water, decline it. I don’t think this is safe. Bring your own water, stay hydrated. Seattle is very hot in August.

5) Make sure you have the name and address of your destination handy, even if you’ve given it to your driver. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

6) Do not provide any personal information to your Uber driver. They should not inquire either. When you arrive at your destination, make sure the address is the same as what you’ve given to your driver.

If you plan on parking in a parking garage & using Uber, I strongly recommend not carrying a purse/bag. You’re less likely to leave something behind if you never took it with you😜. It might sound silly, but it’s true.
